A socially distant outside play

Stage Managed by Sam Allen

Design and photos by Dan Evans

Sound Design - Alex Ungerman

Performed by Shawn Saunders, Merry Magee, Barrett Ogden, Harrison Lind, Jesse Nepivoda, and Isabel Crews â€‹â€‹

The performance only lasted an hour, which is common for shows during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, I highly encourage supporting the artists that are thinking creatively and mounting productions during this time. Sackerson has a production worth seeing, full of artistic risks but no health risks. I applaud them for finding ways to provide content safely, while still promoting art and performance. These dynamics anchor a magnificent little gem, Cherry Wine in Paper Cups – an intimate outdoor play for socially distant audiences, the latest offering by Sackerson, Utah’s exceptional micro-immersive theatrical company.

Likewise, playwright Morag Shepherd has delivered a fabulous script that evokes the right counterpoint of rhythms for the two characters, Taylor and Rain, as well as the narrator, a contemporary version of Eros, who claims omniscient authority on love and romance as predetermined events. A bit of romance on Library Square: Sackerson’s Cherry Wine in Paper Cups a magnificent little gem of live outdoor theater. (The Utah Review)

Cherry Wine in Paper Cups is designed for the COVID-19 age. By turns cautious, reckless, and suspicious, the play is performed by three actors outdoors in the unique style of Salt Lake City’s ever-thought-provoking theatre company, Sackerson Theatre.

Through wireless headphones you’ll experience this almost cinematically with your eye as the camera. There’s no theatrical voice projection and the sound and music design by Alex Ungerman (Producer) and Dan Evans running between scenes and beneath the dialogue is well-chosen and well-timed. This is a method perfected with much success during Sackerson’s 2018 outdoor immersive production, Hindsight. Morag Shepherd (Producer) is the local playwright behind both these engaging, original works. "This show was delightful and beautiful and thought-provoking" ~ Olivia Custodio

"Cherry Wine in Paper Cups by Sackerson was magic. From the circular speech of the characters which slowly morphed and revealed character and story, to the blocking of these beautiful little moments that we all miss so much in this crazy time, and the great connection between the actors, this show fed my soul and left me feeling lighter than when it started" ~ Tyler fox

"If you're looking for ways to get out, go see this. Morag Shepherd is probably my favorite writer, and has been established in my top 5 list. I was also really impressed by the acting. It was beautiful and made me bawl" ~ Gary Argyle

"Such a fun, clever, and well written play. Felt so good to be outside and laugh with my feet in the grass. Highly recommend. The arts need us now more than ever. ~ Lisa Belle

"thank you to my talented friend for once again writing a show that took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes" ~ Finn Nottingham
